About the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint
Franco Scaglione's design for Bertone actually reached production ahead of the Giulietta saloon it was based on, and the Sprint's combination of a light alloy-and-steel body, Alfa's new twin-cam four-cylinder engine, and genuinely sporting handling made it an immediate success — commercially and on the track, where privateer Giuliettas were a common sight through the late 1950s.
Later Sprint Speciale and Sprint Zagato derivatives pushed the formula further, but the standard Sprint coupé remains the model most people picture when they think of a 1950s Alfa Romeo: understated Italian styling over genuinely engaging mechanicals, and the car that set the template for every 105-series coupé — Giulia Sprint, GT Junior, GTV — that followed it.
