The Berlinetta Boxer line ran from 1973 through 1984 across three versions — 365 GT4 BB, 512 BB, and finally this 512 BBi from 1981 — with the 'i' marking the switch from carburettors to Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, improving driveability and emissions compliance without significantly changing the flat-12 engine's character.

Styled by Pininfarina and using a horizontally-opposed 'boxer' twelve-cylinder engine mounted low behind the cabin, the Berlinetta Boxer was Ferrari's answer to Lamborghini's Countach and the direct predecessor to the Testarossa. The BBi, as the final and most usable version, is the one most collectors point to for everyday classic-car driving rather than pure originality-first ownership.
