Launched in 1994, the F355 addressed the 348's most common criticisms with a stiffer chassis, revised suspension geometry and a new 3.5-litre five-valve-per-cylinder V8 — the '5' in F355 refers to those five valves per cylinder — producing a genuinely different, more precise driving experience than its predecessor. The Spider added a manually operated folding soft top over the same underpinnings as the closed GTS and Berlinetta.

The F355 is widely credited as the model where Ferrari's modern reputation for genuinely excellent handling began to take shape, and later cars gained Ferrari's first paddle-shift F1 gearbox option. As one of the last analogue, high-revving Ferrari V8s before electronic driver aids became standard, the F355 Spider remains a favourite among purists who want open-top motoring with that specific era's character.
