About the Maserati 3500 GT
Before the 3500 GT, Maserati had built its reputation almost entirely on racing cars and small-batch specials. The 3500 GT changed that: a twin-cam straight-six engine derived from Maserati's racing programme, bodied by multiple coachbuilders (Touring's Superleggera aluminium body was the standard production version, with Vignale, Frua and others building smaller-run variants), and sold in numbers that made Maserati a genuine competitor to Ferrari and Aston Martin in the GT market.
The model's success — several thousand built across coupé and later Spyder versions over its production run — funded and validated Maserati's shift toward road cars as the company's main business, making the 3500 GT arguably the single most important model in the brand's transition from racing constructor to road-car manufacturer.
