About the Ferrari 208 GTB

Visually near-identical to the contemporary 308 GTB, the 208 used a purpose-built 2.0-litre V8 rather than the 308's 3.0-litre unit, a direct response to Italian luxury tax rules that applied heavily to engines over two litres. From 1982 the 208 gained a turbocharger — the 208 GTB Turbo — to recover some of the performance lost to the smaller displacement.

Because so few were built and almost all stayed in Italy, the 208 is a genuinely rare variant outside its home market today: the same Pininfarina wedge shape and mid-engine V8 layout as the better-known 308, but with a smaller, turbocharged heart born entirely out of domestic tax law rather than performance ambition — which makes it an unusual footnote in Ferrari's V8 history for anyone assembling a broader collection.
